This article describes the correct way to clean the display of DTCO devices to prevent damage
caused by improper handling, and the cleaning of tachograph cards and the card slot.

Cleaning the display:

To minimize the risk of damage to the DTCO display, please carefully follow these instructions:

➢ Clean the display only with a slightly damp cloth or with a Microfiber Cleaning Cloth.
➢ Do not use solvents such as thinner or gasoline for cleaning.
➢ Do not use abrasive cleaners as they can damage the display.

Suitable microfibre cleaning cloths are available from specialist retailers or directly from the UK VDO online shop under tachograph accessories (details at the bottom of the article). Please find below an image of typical damage caused by incorrect cleaning:

DTCO® 3.0 / 4.0 / 4.1 Card Slot / Tachograph Card Cleaning:

Due to events in previous years, we would like to point out that old driver cards are now used in daily driving. This can lead to contact problems as a result of issues such as worn contact surfaces on the card chips, as well as heavy soiling. The DTCO 3.0 / 4.0 / 4.1 will need to have the cards replaced if necessary, or risk losing the contact during driving as a result of exceptional contamination of the tachograph cards.

Card reading errors are caused by contamination of the chip contacts in the DTCO card reader, which in daily use can be caused by things such as dust deposits and oil. The dirt introduced into the card slots from the outside through the chip cards can be removed with our special VDO cleaning card quickly and easily.

As contaminated cards can affect the reading function of the card reader in the card slot, VDO recommend to renew the driver cards in accordance with the requirements of the authorities. If using old and/or dirty cards, VDO further recommend that the tachograph card slot is cleaned at least once a month with cleaning cards, and the cards themselves are cleaned regularly using the VDO cleaning cloth.

A VDO cleaning kit (includes cleaning cards and wipes) or individual components can be ordered via specialist retailers or the UK VDO web shop (details at the bottom of the article).

Please note that this recommendation does not constitute a product quality reduction. VDO products are constantly subject to strict quality requirements.

Please follow the cleaning instructions and check out VDO‘s short video on how to clean the card slot below:
