With the introduction of the Smart Tachographs Version 2 (VDO‘s DTCO 4.1) in 2023, a new generation of driver cards (G2V2) were also introduced in Europe. These can store the new activities of the new tachographs, such as the automatic detection of border crossings and the recording of loading and unloading operations.
Older generation driver cards (G2V1, introduced in 2019) cannot store these new activities. In these cases, the new activities are stored only in the Tachograph's mass memory.
Please note that does not constitute a defect or warranty of the tachograph.
Drivers who wish to store this data on their driver card must exchange their G2V1 driver card for an up-to-date G2V2 driver card for a fee. However, this is completely voluntary.
Since the G2V1 driver cards were issued until July 2023 and are valid for five years, this situation will continue until mid-2028.
Please be aware that with border crossings, these can be registered on a G2V1 card but drivers must follow
the old rules (G2V1 tachographs) – stop at the first available stopping place after crossing the border and
manually enter the country using the menu on the tachograph to navigate to 'Entry Driver 1 – Begin Country'.
